In the traditionally last event of the Plymouth & District Badminton League’s Season, the Veterans took to the field in an event that was to take place for the first time in three years.
The 2015 Veteran’s Mixed Pair Handicapped Tournament saw a lower age limit of 40 this year having been lowered from 45 in order to help attract entries. Despite clashing with the Easter holidays and Badminton England events, the Tournament still attracted 12 players with an age range spanning 30 years representing 6 of our League Clubs. Keen to keep this Tournament alive, the League decided to go ahead with the event despite the relatively small entry.
After a Round Robin where each pair played each other, the top two pairs gained an automatic semi-final place. Lynne Hunt and Gareth Pearse (both representing Victoria) topped the group with 105 points despite playing off a -8 handicap whilst Neil Hammacott (PLC) and Claire Voaden (Ivybridge) playing off -1 took the second place with 98 points.
The remaining 4 pairs had to play off for the remaining two semi-final places. John Zarb (Kitto) and Colette David (BATS) with a +3 handicap overcame the Victoria pair of Wally Bickford and Dylys Bradshaw (+7) whilst Adrian Bunsell and Liz Marker (both representing Ivybridge), playing off -3 overcame the PLC pair Julia Symons and Andy Crocker (+3).
In the first semi-final Hunt and Pearse (-8) defeated David and Zarb (+3) 21-14 21-17 whilst Marker and Bunsell (-3) secured their position in the final by defeating Voaden and Hammacott (-1) 21-12 21-18.
Elsewhere, all of the League Division titles had all been confirmed. The Medley League Divisions One, Two and Three were won by Victoria A, Eggbuckland and Plymouth Life Centre B respectively. The Ladies Division was won by Victoria whilst the Men’s Divisions A, B and C were won by Victoria A, Plymouth Life Centre A and Liskeard.
