The Plymouth & District Badminton League organize a variety of tournaments during the course of each season. All players wishing to enter one of our tournaments are required to be affiliated to both the Plymouth and District Badminton League and to Badminton England.
The Beckly Cup Tournament is our oldest running competion dating back to 1930. This tournament is open to a single team from every club affiliated to the Plymouth and District Badminton League. Each team receives a handicap calculated on their league position and current form. The early rounds of the competition are played, at the club venues whilst the final is played at a neutral venue with shuttles provided by the league (feather shuttles are used throughout the completion). The thing that makes this completion stand out from others is that the handicap awarded is not known until the end of the match – it remains in a sealed envelope until the final game is played. This means every point counts during the match and every team has a shot at the title.
Our Open tournament is open to all league affiliated players. Playing with feather shuttles, there are a range of events – Singles and doubles events for Men and Ladies as well as mixed doubles. The tournament follows standard Badminton England format and normally consists of a round robin event with the victors of each group going through to a knock out.
This tournament is closed to Division One Medley players, Division A Men & Ladies players and Senior County (Firsts & Seconds) Players. Playing with feather shuttles, there are a range of events – Singles and doubles for Men and Ladies as well as mixed doubles events. The tournament follows standard Badminton England format and is operated as a Handicapped Tournament, normally consisting of a round robin event with the victors of each group going through to a knock out.
This handicapped Mixed Doubles tournament is open to anyone aged over 45 at the beginning of the League season and affiliated to the League. Feather shuttles are used throughout and the format normally normally consists of a round robin event with the victors of each group going through to a knock out.
Our Christmas tournament is a mixed doubles, handicapped tournament open to League affiliated players. The pairings do not need to be from the same club or even same League Division and handicaps are calculated according to player ability and current form. Feather shuttles are used throughout and the format normally consists of a round robin with the winners of each group entering a knock out phase. The remainder of the groups entries will also enter to a knock out, Plate event – this all adds up to a full days badminton for everyone – just right for burning off the calories before Christmas!
The Ellis tournament offers events for under 11’s, under 14’s, under 16’s and under 18’s.
Please note: the P&D Junior Ellis Tournament is supported by but not run by the league.
